In the world of academia there is a lot of reading and writing students must complete regardless of what degree program they have decided to enroll in.  English degree seekers are able to look at the reading and writing that other courses of study must complete and laugh – because an English degree is a rigorous one that requires students to do far more reading and writing than the average college student. The first step towards being a successful participant in any English degree program is for a student to learn to write analytical papers at a higher level than their collegiate contemporaries.  In order to accomplish this, a student will have to go through a lot of practice.  A couple practical pieces of advice for students who would like to become better writers are for these students to learn the different laws of grammar and to develop high complexity diction as professors enjoy students who have command of both.

There are many courses one can take in an English degree program – and many of these courses are highly specific and specialized in their nature.  In order to graduate from many colleges or universities with an English degree, students must take courses in all of the major categories within that degree field.  These categories are American literature, Poetry, William Shakespeare and British literature. Be sure to continue to read about college degrees online.

American literature is remarkable to study not only because it is the written word that reflects the values of the American society throughout its history, but also because there is immense diversity.  This is not only among American authors, but also on subjects that can be considered uniquely American.  Many famous American authors are freed slaves, immigrants, or come from wealthy families.  Some of the most famous American authors include Upton Sinclair, Carl Sandburg, J.D. Salinger, and Mark Twain.

Poetry is the oldest form of writing as it dates all the way back to the ancient Greek civilizations.  There are many different types of poetry, such as epic poems and romantic poems – even haikus.  One thing all poems have in common is that they are to be written in verse form and be replete with many different instances of figurative language. William Shakespeare is the most famous author in the history of the English language.  Primarily known as a playwright, Shakespeare’s poetry is also without parallel.  Many students will enjoy getting the chance to learn about Shakespeare and his plays.  Some of his most famous works are “The Taming of the Shrew”, “The Tempest”, “As You Like It”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “The Merchant of Venice”.

British literature is the oldest form of literature in the English language as the islands of Great Britain and Ireland are the areas in which this work originated from.  Like American literature, British literature is the chronicle of the written word - except the time period is not hundreds of years but thousands of years.  Famous British writers include Edmund Spenser, Sir Philip Sidney, Alexander Pope, Percy Bysshe Shelley and William Blake.

Obtaining an English degree is certainly not one of the easier degrees that colleges offer.  Students who have the  drive and dedication to keep reading on although they may not understand everything that they read are encouraged to give this degree a try.
